Plot[]

The episode begins at the deck one evening where Samuel telling Emily and Charley the story of "Whiffy the Skunk Ghost", a skunk who once lived on Birdwell Island but mysteriously disappeared one day and haunted the island with his eerily smell and is rumored to be currently living in the woods of Birdwell Park. The dogs are frightened but Samuel tells everyone that Whiffy is not real and it's only a story.

The next day, the dogs are at the park. Cleo decides to go play in the woods but, Clifford and T-Bone are hesitant to follow Cleo since they're were scared of Samuel's story. Cleo assures them that ghosts are not real and they decide to follow her in. During a game of tag, Cleo plays a trick on Clifford saying Whiffy is right behind him. This scares Clifford and T-Bone (who was hiding in a nearby bush) causing the both of them to run off and they stop at a nearby lake. They notice Cleo isn't with them and see a bush moving, thinking it's Whiffy, Cleo jumps out of the bush laughing. Even though they know ghost aren't real, Clifford and T-Bone tell Cleo that her trick wasn't funny and that it's not nice to trick anyone like that. Cleo quickly brushes this off and suggests that they go swimming to which they agree to.

As the dogs play in the lake, Clifford and T-Bone hear Cleo yelling from a nearby bush claiming Whiffy has got her. They run off to help Cleo only to find out she tricked them again. Upset, Clifford and T-Bone silently leave. Cleo catches up with them saying she was only having fun but T-Bone says he doesn't like "that kind of fun". Cleo apologizes saying she won't do it again and decides to just play normally with them. Clifford agrees to this but tells Cleo to not play anymore tricks to which she seemingly agrees to.

After finding T-Bone at Hide and Seek, Clifford hears Cleo yelling for help. T-Bone believes Cleo is just trying to trick them again. Clifford quietly sneaks over to the bush where Cleo is hiding and hears her laughing. Cleo is indeed trying to trick him and T-Bone again despite her saying she wouldn't anymore. Clifford decides he and T-Bone should just leave so that when Cleo notices them leaving, she'll figure out she won't be able to trick them anymore and will follow them to apologize. T-Bone agrees and they both leave. Back at the bush, Cleo is awaiting for the other two to come "rescue" her but notices Clifford and T-Bone are nowhere to be seen. Cleo quickly realizes they found out she was trying to trick them again and decides to go find and apologize to them. Right as Cleo is about to leave, her bow gets caught on a branch and is unable to free herself from it. Scared and alone, Cleo desperately calls out for help and realizes she's actually in trouble.

Later, Emily Elizabeth gives Clifford and T-Bone some food when she gets a phone call from Mrs. Diller asking if she's seen Cleo. Having overheard, Clifford and T-Bone realize that Cleo never went home and they become worried. Wondering if she's still in the woods, they decide to go look for her. Back in the woods, Cleo tells herself that she doesn't blame her friends for not coming and promises to never play tricks on them again if she ever gets out. At that moment, a skunk comes out of a nearby bush, a real skunk. Cleo attempts to scare off the skunk by barking at it but this only results in her getting sprayed. Shortly afterwards, Clifford and T-Bone come looking for Cleo when they sniff out the stench, making them think Whiffy the skunk ghost got Cleo for real this time. They find Cleo who explains what happened. After Clifford frees Cleo from the bush, she apologizes for playing those tricks on her friends and promises for real to never do it again.

Sometime afterwards, Cleo is taken to Mr. Kibble, who's already given her four baths before the smell is completely off. Cleo comes out of Mr. Kibble's smelling nicely once again and proud says she learned her lesson " the stinky way".
